Based on my experience you must be in a kingdom in order to call people to war. In order to take a town with the 100 or so troops you've got, you just have to be really predatory. Hit N to open up the journal and go to kingdoms from there you can look at the different Empires to see who is at war with who.

From what I understand from watching a couple of vids, trade skill is the least important thing for caravan leaders. It barely affects the profit. Scouting and Riding are way more important. So at this stage, there is pretty much no reason to have a companion with Trade by the looks.
BsZr7. It's all about Steward in the end, it ultimately decides my husband/wife as well. I keep 1 scout, 1 surgeon, 1 stewart in my party. You need a companion with high trade skill to make the caravans worth it. Low trade skill leads to much lower profits. As for the parties, send men and women with high tactic skills.

Companions can only get from 0 to 10 riding by doing tournaments, unless you tinker with XML files. One of my companions came riding with "old sumpter horse". Maybe that's the ridable sumpter horse everyone is looking for. I used a standard sumpter horse for my test.
